Standing and limits

Effective August 4, 2026. Three separate matters belong here: what this paper is not, where its money comes from, and what can genuinely go wrong to a reader walking a riverbank on its advice. The third is the one that matters.

What this paper is not

An independent paper issued by Suntraveller Bureau LLC of Memphis. No parent company, no investors, no commercial arrangement with anybody in travel beyond the one described below.

None of the following describe it: agency, operator, airline, charter service, booking site, ticket seller. No airline, hotel, resort, booking service, park authority, transport company, newspaper, studio or record label endorses it, sponsors it, directs it or is represented by it. Tickets are not sold here, payments are not taken, reservations are not held, and nobody's travel is arranged.

No airline, hotel chain, booking site or equipment maker is named in the writing. That is deliberate: naming them is how a paper begins sounding like their partner.

Where the money comes from

One arrangement, disclosed everywhere it is relevant.

A search desk sits on the front page, with a page of its own at flight search setting out the detail. What the desk does is pass a route to Travelpayouts. They are a booking service, we are not. A traveller who searches and then books is dealing with them, or with the airline they sell for, on whatever terms those two set between them. Where a booking follows a search begun here, this paper may be paid a commission by the service.

Nobody pays extra for it. The money comes out of the service's own margin rather than from an inflated price, and it changes neither the results shown nor anything written elsewhere.

Everything else is shut and stays shut. Nobody has paid to be written about, no place has been offered coverage in exchange for anything, there is no advertising space, no sponsored writing, no affiliate links inside the writing and nothing sold to readers.

What the river can do

Read this part properly.

Water rises faster than it looks. A rising stage in the lower Mississippi is a slow, silent, enormous thing. Backwater fills side channels from behind, so a path walked in dry can be cut off by water that never appeared to move toward you. Anybody walking bottomland on a rising gauge should know the way out and check the reading before setting off, not after.

Mud is the ordinary injury. River silt on a slope after a drawdown has the consistency of grease. It is how people go into water they did not intend to enter, and it is worse near boat ramps where the surface is worn smooth.

Heat is the second hazard and it is underestimated every summer. A levee road has no shade for its entire length. In July the walk back at noon, in full sun, having been out since seven, is a Walking back at noon in open sun, after a start at seven, is what actually puts people in difficulty out here, and it does so every summer. Carry more water than the mileage suggests and finish before the middle of the morning.

Isolation multiplies both. Across most of this ground there is no signal, nobody about, and nobody who would register that you had not come back until late in the day. Leave your route and your expected return with a person. It costs nothing and it is the single most useful sentence on this page.

Nothing here replaces a posted warning. A closed levee gate, a flood advisory, a heat advisory or a barricaded road governs, not anything written on this site. The stage recorded in a piece is the stage on that one day and yours will differ.

This is a paper, not an adviser

Accounts of walking beside a river are no substitute for anybody qualified in medicine, law, money or water safety, and should not be read as one. Heat and exertion affect people very differently, and anybody whose health touches on either should ask a physician rather than a small paper in Tennessee.

Accuracy and errors

Reasonable care goes into every piece, and anything checkable against a public source, including gauge readings, is checked before publishing. Even so, roads close, ferries stop, access rules are rewritten and stages change hourly.

Something wrong here is worth telling the desk. Corrections take priority over everything else and a corrected page carries a line saying what changed.

Photographs

Every image was made by the writer for this paper, on the trip described. Nothing is stock, nothing is bought, nothing is illustrated after the fact. Images show one day's conditions and promise nothing about water level, visibility or weather on any other.

What remains yours

Decisions taken on the strength of anything read here remain the reader's own. Loss, injury, expense or inconvenience following a visit to somewhere described here, or following any arrangement struck with a third party afterwards, is not something Suntraveller Bureau LLC answers for. The limits in the conditions of use apply to this page as well.
